Over the past two months in the depths of the New Zealand winter, I’ve been starting phase two of my toy building journey.

Around 2024 I designed and built a bunch of characters using Nomad Sculpt and my Elegoo Resin printer, but I got stuck.

I got stuck when I realised I couldn’t paint them and that I had to learn a whole new skillset to get them to a point that they looked like the toys I loved…

This time around though, I’m pushing through. I am refining the designs and silhouettes, and I’ve invested in an airbrush, a new Elegoo Saturn Ultra printer, and I have my pressure pot ready to take them to the production stage.

Like anything I try and learn, it’s easy to stop when it gets hard, but what I’ve found is pushing past that point is where the real excitement and satisfaction happens.

The idea from this character came from sketching - which is a weird concept to me, as sketching with sculpture sounds well weird- but that’s what it came from - pulling around spheres and cubes until something came out.

So this is Dodd.

He’s a dog, a dad, he loves dad jokes, coffee and being grumpy - although sometimes he’s cheerful.

I’ll share more as this progresses but you can see on this page some renders along with some in process shots of the physical model build.

Dodd’s prototype will be finished with the Elegoo Saturn Ultra 12k, sanded and painted with airbrush and then molded into a final resin sculpture.
